The Inauguration: An Invitation to Take Risks, Have Compassion, and Get Loud

Sometimes I wonder if mixing my personal life with my business costs me.

Some say it is risky. Maybe it is, but the cost is greater, both personally and professionally, to keep these two parts of me siloed.

When thinking about the events of 2020, many shared that January 1st was a new beginning; a chance to press the “restart” button.

For me, that day is today.

Leadership is about inspiring, building people up, and mentorship. It starts with knowing what you believe. And that starts with listening to those around you, considering (like really, really considering) what they have to say, and then forming your own opinion, without attaching yourself to promoting, defending, or protecting it.

Leadership starts with being certain and open to receiving new information and maybe even changing your stance.

And while not linear, it is about bringing everyone else along for the ride of their lives, sometimes driving and sometimes letting others do the driving. Leaders build leaders.

We all benefit from strong leadership.

To be clear, my excitement today is not necessarily about policy reform (but, yes).

It is about inclusivity. Mood. Affect. Generosity.

Leadership. All of it.

Obviously, I’m not the only one excited about a new Administration and Congress. From Lady Gaga – with reserved awe, to Jennifer Lopez – with the directive to “Get Loud,” to Garth Brooks – who invited us all to join in the singing of Amazing Grace and who then couldn’t contain his own excitement, breaking free from formality, running about, hugging everyone, we are watching hope in action. We are watching our fellow Americans, giddy with excitement.

We are witnessing pure joy and an eagerness to hit the ground running, all part of something much bigger than the sum of its parts.

And look out for Amanda Gorman. That’s all I can say. Watch her here

I cannot help but have compassion for the outgoing administration.

Yup. I said it. More on that here.

My ability to feel – really, really feel – compassion, is only here because I continue to approach those who activate me with lots of curiosity and kindness. Not all the time, but when I catch myself doing the opposite, I can change gears. What a difference it makes.

I am just so grateful and excited.

For now, though, I’m signing off to go get loud.
